Read this first. It might be the last protein shake you ever need to make.
I'll keep this quick, no fluff, straight to it.
You've just finished a session. Your muscles are primed to absorb protein and the clock is ticking on that recovery window. And what's the plan? Dig out the shaker bottle, hope you remembered to bring water, mix up a chalky scoop of powder, and drink something that tastes like it was designed in a lab. Because it was.
Or you reach for a protein bar. Twenty-plus ingredients, a sugar hit you didn't ask for, and a wrapper that ends up stuffed in the bottom of your bag.
Neither one is real food. Neither one is something you'd actually crave. And neither one was built for a gym bag, a car door pocket, or a desk drawer.
There's a better way to hit your protein target, and it's been around a lot longer than whey isolate.
It's called biltong, air-dried, seasoned beef, made the traditional South African way. No cooking, no powders, no shortcuts. Just quality beef, cured and dried until it becomes one of the most protein-dense whole foods you can carry.
We've been making it the proper way since day one, and it's earned recognition to prove it: LUX Magazine's Best Authentic Biltong Provider, Surrey, 2022. We're also proud to be the biltong trusted by the Springboks themselves, supplying the squad whenever they're on tour in the UK. If it's good enough to fuel a Rugby World Cup winning front row, it's good enough for your gym bag.
Let me show you exactly why it belongs in your gym bag.
To your next PB,
Mark Pollak, Founder, Billy Tong
Whey shakes win on raw protein-per-scoop if you're only comparing powder to powder. But you can't eat powder. Once you factor in what it actually takes to get a shake into your body, biltong wins on convenience every time, without giving up much protein at all.

And unlike a protein bar loaded with syrup and sweeteners, biltong gets there on beef, vinegar, salt and spice. Nothing else.
Resistance training, running, cycling, whatever your sport, the science is consistent: you need roughly 1.6–2.2g of protein per kilogram of bodyweight per day to properly support muscle repair and growth. For an 80kg lifter, that's 128–176g a day. Hitting that from three meals alone is genuinely difficult. That's what the right kind of snacking is for.

This isn't a protein claim dreamed up by a marketing team. It's what beef does naturally when you cure it, season it and let it dry.
A shake needs water, a shaker bottle you remembered to bring, and somewhere to rinse it out afterwards. A protein bar needs to survive the heat of your car without turning into a puddle. Biltong needs none of that.

Most shakes taste like flavoured chalk, no matter how many artificial sweeteners get thrown at the problem. Biltong doesn't disguise anything. It's beef, properly seasoned and air-dried the traditional South African way, so what you taste is rich, savoury, real flavour.

For convenience, taste and ingredient quality, yes. A whey shake still wins on raw protein grams per scoop, but biltong gets you 14–17g of complete protein per 30g serving with zero prep, no blender and no shaker bottle to carry around all day. Many serious lifters use both: a shake for the fastest possible absorption straight after training, and biltong for everything in between.
Traditional beef biltong contains 45–55g of protein per 100g, one of the highest concentrations of any snack food available. A 30g handful gives you roughly 14–17g of complete protein, on par with two large eggs or a small chicken breast.
Biltong is cured with salt as part of the traditional drying process, so yes, there's a meaningful sodium content. In a typical 30–40g serving that works out at roughly 300–720mg, which is manageable for most active adults and can help replace electrolytes lost through training. If you're managing sodium for medical reasons, factor it into your daily intake as you would any cured food.
Yes. With around 1–3g of carbohydrate per 100g and virtually no sugar, biltong is one of the most naturally low-carb, high-protein snacks available, making it a strong fit for keto, low-carb and general high-protein eating.
Absolutely. Many serious trainers eat biltong daily as part of their protein routine. As with any salted food, keep an eye on portion sizes and vary your protein sources across the week.
Billy Tong biltong is made fresh to order and typically dispatched within 2–3 working days. Once opened, it's best enjoyed within a few days at room temperature, or kept in the fridge in a paper bag, never plastic, for up to 30 days.
Every pack is made fresh in small batches using traditional South African methods, no shortcuts, no artificial preservatives. If anything about your order isn't right, our team is here 7 days a week (9am–5pm) to sort it out.
Every serious athlete is looking for an edge: better recovery, better consistency, better nutrition that actually fits real life. Biltong has been the answer for South African athletes for generations. It's time it earned a permanent place in your gym bag too.
Free UK mainland shipping on orders over £65. Award-winning biltong, made the traditional South African way.
P.S. If you only remember one thing from this page, remember this: the best nutrition plan is the one you'll actually stick to. A shake you dread mixing and a bar you're not sure about the ingredients in are easy to skip. A pack of biltong that actually tastes good isn't. Build your Snack Pack, throw it in your bag, and stop thinking about your next protein hit. We'll take care of the rest.
