Billy Tong has always been about celebrating the very best of South Africa. We are proudly South African, from the hand-crafted biltong we stock in our Cobham, Surrey premises to the spirit we bring to everything we do. Today, we are thrilled to announce a remarkable new chapter: Billy Tong is now stocking and selling a curated selection of world-class South African wines, sourced from some of the Cape Winelands' most celebrated estates.
South Africa's wine story is one of the most compelling on earth. It began in 1659, when Jan van Riebeeck pressed the first grapes at the Cape of Good Hope, and accelerated dramatically with the arrival of French Huguenot refugees in the late 1680s, who brought centuries of viticultural knowledge from the Loire, Burgundy and Bordeaux. Today, the Cape Winelands, spanning Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Robertson, Elgin, and the windswept Swartland, produce wines that consistently top international awards, rivalling the finest bottles from France, Italy and Napa Valley.
Whether you pair a glass with a platter of our legendary biltong, serve it at a dinner party, or simply savour it on its own, South African wine offers extraordinary depth, character and value. This guide introduces every estate in our growing collection, their heritage, their heartland, and what makes their wines truly exceptional.
🍷 Billy Tong stocks wines from 32 South African estates, from centuries-old Cape Dutch farms to cutting-edge boutique producers. Download our complete, up-to-date wine list to explore every bottle available.

Why South African Wine Belongs in Every Serious Collection
South Africa's wine regions benefit from a remarkable convergence: warm, sun-drenched days tempered by cooling Atlantic and Indian Ocean breezes, ancient granite and sandstone soils, and a winemaking culture that blends centuries of European tradition with bold New World innovation. The result is a wine landscape that offers extraordinary diversity, from the powerful Cabernet Sauvignons and Pinotages of Stellenbosch to the ethereal cool-climate Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of Elgin and Walker Bay.
South Africa is also home to Pinotage, the country's own grape variety: a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, created in 1925 by Professor Abraham Perold at Stellenbosch University. At its best, and our estates produce some of the finest examples, Pinotage is rich, plummy and deeply spiced, unlike anything else in the wine world.
The estates we have selected represent the full sweep of South African winemaking excellence, from farms granted in the 1680s to trailblazing modern producers who have redefined what the Cape can produce.

Anthonij Rupert
Franschhoek, Western Cape
Named in honour of the late Anthonij Rupert, beloved son of South African business legend Dr Anton Rupert, this prestigious estate is headquartered at the historic L'Ormarins farm in the Franschhoek Valley, set against the majestic Groot Drakenstein Mountains. Widely regarded as one of the Cape's finest red wine producers, it draws on exceptional vineyard sites across Franschhoek, the Swartland, Darling and Elandskloof.
The Anthonij Rupert Cellar is one of the most technically advanced in Africa, gravity-fed and meticulously managed, yet the wines are anything but clinical. The flagship Anthonij Rupert range is considered among the finest red wines produced anywhere on the continent, while the Cape of Good Hope range pays tribute to the rich viticultural history of the Cape.
Ataraxia
Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, Walker Bay
Taking its name from the ancient Greek philosophy of tranquil mental calmness, Ataraxia is a boutique estate perched on the celebrated Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge above the coastal town of Hermanus. Founded by winemaker Kevin Grant, Ataraxia is one of the Cape's great cool-climate specialists, producing wines of extraordinary elegance and precision.
The estate's Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc have achieved cult status among South African fine wine enthusiasts, recognised for their Burgundian purity, crystalline acidity and exceptional longevity. For those who want something genuinely rare and beautiful from the Cape's southern coastline, Ataraxia is a name to seek out.
Babylonstoren
Drakenstein Valley, Western Cape
One of the oldest surviving Cape Dutch farms in South Africa, Babylonstoren dates to 1692, when Dutch settlers first established a farm in the shadow of the Simonsberg Mountains. The name derives from the Dutch 'Bablinische Tooren', a reference to the distinctive conical hill overlooking the estate. After passing through many generations, it was lovingly restored from 2007 by media entrepreneur Koos Bekker and his wife Karen Roos.
Their restoration has been extraordinary: the estate's world-famous garden, described by The Sunday Times as "the Versailles of vegetable gardens", now houses over 300 edible and medicinal plant species. The state-of-the-art winery, designed by noted architect Gerard de Villiers, produces elegant, expressive wines that capture the essence of this exceptional terroir.
Beyerskloof
Simonsberg, Stellenbosch
If one estate can claim the crown as the undisputed King of Pinotage, it is Beyerskloof. Founded and run by legendary Cellarmaster Beyers Truter, this family estate in the Simonsberg foothills of Stellenbosch has dedicated itself entirely to elevating Pinotage from misunderstood outsider to internationally celebrated varietal.
Beyerskloof produces Pinotage at every price point and style, from approachable everyday wines to single-vineyard icons. Their Pinotage Reserve and Faith Blend are benchmarks for the category, rich, spiced, deeply coloured, and utterly South African, with over one million bottles sold annually worldwide. Beyers Truter's dedication to this proudly South African grape has been transformative for the entire wine industry.
Boschendal
Franschhoek, Western Cape
Among South Africa's most iconic wine estates, Boschendal's title deeds date to 1685, making it one of the oldest wine farms in the country. The name, Dutch for 'bush and dale', captures the pastoral beauty of this sprawling estate nestled between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. Its first owner, Jean le Long, was among the French Huguenot refugees granted land at the Cape by the Dutch East India Company; the estate remained in the de Villiers family for over 150 years from 1715.
Recognised as a National Monument, Boschendal's beautifully preserved Cape Dutch manor house remains open to visitors. A WWF Conservation Champion practicing regenerative farming, the estate produces some of South Africa's most celebrated wines from its original 1795 cellar, including iconic sparkling vintages and noble red varietals, while standing as a living testament to three and a half centuries of winemaking.
Bouchard Finlayson
Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Walker Bay
Established in 1989 through a groundbreaking partnership between acclaimed Burgundian winemaker Paul Bouchard and South African pioneer Peter Finlayson, Bouchard Finlayson was founded on a shared obsession: to produce world-class Pinot Noir in the cool maritime terroir of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Peter Finlayson is widely credited as the father of South African Pinot Noir, the Galpin Peak and Tête de Cuvée consistently rank among the finest examples produced outside Burgundy.
Only 25 of the estate's 125 hectares are under vine; the remainder is protected conservation land preserving the Western Cape's indigenous fynbos. Alongside Pinot Noir, Bouchard Finlayson is celebrated for award-winning Chardonnay and the innovative Franco-Italian red blend Hannibal. Owned since 2000 by the Tollman family, proprietors of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, the estate continues to set the benchmark for cool-climate South African winemaking.
Darling Cellars
Darling, Swartland, Western Cape
Situated in the Groenekloof ward of Darling, roughly an hour north of Cape Town along the West Coast, Darling Cellars has transformed itself from a traditional bulk producer into a respected maker of quality-driven, award-winning wines. The Darling wine region is characterised by its unique West Coast terroir: granite and clay soils, extreme diurnal temperature variation and the cooling influence of the nearby Benguela Current flowing in from the Antarctic.
Darling Cellars is particularly celebrated for rich, full-bodied reds, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon carrying the distinctive mineral character of the Swartland's ancient soils. The Black Granite range and Onyx reserve wines are highly regarded expressions of what makes this compelling, wind-swept region increasingly sought after by serious wine collectors.
Glenelly
Simonsberg, Stellenbosch
One of the most romantic stories in the modern Cape wine industry. In 2003, at the remarkable age of 78, May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, former proprietor of the legendary Grand Cru Classé Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac, Bordeaux, purchased a 123-hectare estate on the Simonsberg foothills in Stellenbosch. The land itself has a history stretching to 1682. The '1783' stamped on every Glenelly label commemorates the year her ancestor Elie Miailhe was appointed Royal Wine Broker to the French crown.
With a philosophy rooted in decades of Bordeaux expertise, Glenelly produces wines of aristocratic elegance: low yields, minimal intervention, French oak ageing and an unrelenting focus on quality. The Glass Collection range, inspired by Madame's private collection of antique glass art, and the flagship Estate Reserve are wines of genuine distinction. The estate is now guided by her grandchildren, carrying a family wine legacy spanning over 240 years.
Hartenberg
Bottelary Hills, Stellenbosch
Dating its origins to 1692, when the first settlers were granted virgin land in what is now Stellenbosch wine country, Hartenberg is one of the historic jewels of the Cape Winelands. The name, Afrikaans for 'Heart of the Mountain', perfectly captures the estate's deep-rooted connection to its dramatic natural setting. The title deed to 'Het Hartenberg' was formally granted by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1704.
Owned by the Mackenzie family since 1987, Hartenberg honours the influential Finlayson winemaking family who preceded them, its flagship Chardonnay is named Eleanor, after the formidable Eleanor Finlayson who first put the estate on the wine map. Under Cellarmaster Carl Schultz, whose 2008 Shiraz won the Syrah du Monde competition in France in 2012, Hartenberg has become one of South Africa's most acclaimed estates. Its underground cellar is the largest privately owned barrel cellar in the country.
Iona
Elgin Valley, Western Cape
Perched at 420 metres above sea level in South Africa's coolest wine-growing region, Iona is arguably the most dramatically sited vineyard in the Cape. Founded in 1997 by engineer-turned-winemaker Andrew Gunn, the estate is named after the ancient Scottish island of Iona, a nod to Gunn's ancestry traceable more than a thousand years to Viking Chief Olaf the Black, a lineage reflected in the Viking ship that adorns every Iona label.
Surrounded by the UNESCO-certified Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, the most florally diverse area per square unit on earth, Iona's unique microclimate creates sea-mist blankets that protect the grapes from the African sun, allowing harvests up to two months later than Stellenbosch. The result is wines of crystalline precision, exceptional natural acidity, and hauntingly long finishes: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that rival the finest produced anywhere in the world.
JC Le Roux
Devon Valley, Stellenbosch
Named after Jan Cloete le Roux, a pioneering figure in the Cape sparkling wine industry, JC Le Roux is South Africa's leading specialist in Méthode Cap Classique, South Africa's answer to Champagne, produced by traditional secondary in-bottle fermentation. Based in the scenic Devon Valley of Stellenbosch, the house is dedicated entirely to the art of sparkling winemaking.
JC Le Roux occupies a unique position in the South African wine landscape: a focused, purpose-built house for sparkling wine at a time when the genre is experiencing extraordinary growth. Their wines, including the celebrated La Chanson and Pinot Noir expressions, have introduced generations of consumers to the world of premium Cap Classique, and make a superb companion to Billy Tong's range of droëwors and biltong.
KWV
Paarl, Western Cape
Few institutions have shaped South African wine more profoundly than KWV, the Ko-operatieve Wijnbouers Vereeniging, established in Paarl in 1918. For most of the twentieth century, KWV was essentially the regulatory body of the entire South African wine industry. At its heart stands the magnificent Cathedral Cellar, built in 1930 and famed for its barrel arches carved with scenes from Cape winemaking history, one of South Africa's most celebrated wine venues.
Today, KWV operates as a premium producer drawing on grapes from over 400 vineyard sites across the Western Cape. Its Mentors range, bold, single-varietal expressions of the Cape's finest cultivars — and its internationally celebrated brandies have made KWV a household name across the UK. Roodeberg, one of South Africa's oldest and most iconic red blends, has been produced continuously since 1949.
Kaapzicht
Bottelary Hills, Stellenbosch
Kaapzicht 'View of the Cape', is a fourth-generation family estate with a history tracing to 1946, when WWII veteran Major David Steytler traded his Karoo sheep farm for this spectacular Bottelary Hills property, then known as Rozendal. The Steytler family's Chenin Blanc vines, planted in 1947, are now the second oldest surviving Chenin Blanc vineyard in all of South Africa.
Kaapzicht is most celebrated for its mastery of the Cape Blend, South Africa's distinctive red incorporating Pinotage. In 2001, Kaapzicht's Steytler Vision was named Best Red Wine in the World by Decanter magazine, making it the first ever Cape Blend to achieve such global recognition. Under fourth-generation Cellarmaster Danie Steytler Jnr, the estate continues to craft wines that speak eloquently of the Bottelary Hills' distinctive granite and decomposed shale terroir.
Kanonkop
Simonsberg, Stellenbosch
Kanonkop is widely regarded as South Africa's First Growth, a term borrowed from Bordeaux's hierarchy and applied with full justification to this iconic estate on the Simonsberg slopes of Stellenbosch. Under the stewardship of the Krige family for four generations, Kanonkop has built a global reputation as the Cape's greatest producer of Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Paul Sauer blend, a Bordeaux-style red of immense complexity, is consistently ranked among South Africa's best wines.
Kanonkop's name derives from a historical cannon once fired on the hill to signal the arrival of ships at the Cape, summoning farmers to port. The estate was built on dryland farming of old vines, some exceeding 40 years, producing wines of exceptional depth and longevity. A member of the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild, Kanonkop holds more Platter's five-star ratings than virtually any other producer in South Africa.
Ken Forrester
Helderberg, Stellenbosch
The story of Ken Forrester Wines is one of passion triumphant. Ken Forrester, originally a celebrated restaurateur, fell in love with the Cape in the early 1990s and in 1993 purchased Scholtzenhof farm at public auction, one of the oldest farms in the Cape, originally granted in 1689 as Zandberg and derelict when the Forresters acquired it. He and his wife Teresa threw themselves into restoring both the historic Cape Dutch homestead (built in 1694) and the vineyards.
The first wines under the Ken Forrester label were produced in 1994, and the estate rapidly emerged as the most passionate champion of Chenin Blanc in South Africa, earning Forrester the nickname "Mr Chenin". The FMC (Forrester Meinert Chenin) and The Gypsy are landmark wines that have placed South African Chenin Blanc firmly in the international conversation alongside the Loire Valley's finest Vouvray and Savennières.
Kleinood
Devon Valley, Stellenbosch
A hidden gem of the Cape Winelands, 'kleinood' means 'little treasure' in Afrikaans, this boutique estate was established in 2000 by architect Gerard de Villiers and his wife Libby in the scenic Devon Valley of Stellenbosch. With just 10 hectares under vine, Kleinood is among the smallest and most focused estates in South Africa, producing wines in extremely limited quantities that have nonetheless attracted significant international attention.
De Villiers' background as one of South Africa's most celebrated wine estate architects, having designed wineries for Babylonstoren, among others, informs a meticulous, detail-obsessed approach to both viticulture and winemaking. The signature Tamboerskloof blend, drawn from the estate's carefully tended low-yielding vines, is a wine of unusual concentration, texture and character that rewards patient cellaring.
L'Ormarins
Franschhoek, Western Cape
Part of the Rupert Wines estate in Franschhoek, L'Ormarins is one of the historic Huguenot farms of the Franschhoek Valley, with origins in the late seventeenth century. The manor house, set in immaculately restored gardens against the backdrop of the Groot Drakenstein Mountains, is a masterpiece of Cape Dutch architecture and houses a world-class art collection alongside the famous Franschhoek Motor Museum.
L'Ormarins wines are crafted with the same meticulous standards as the Anthonij Rupert range, with a focus on expressive, accessible wines including an exceptional Cap Classique sparkling wine. The estate's tasting rooms, housed in the historic manor house with its yellowwood floors, beam ceilings and sweeping valley views, offer one of the most beautiful wine-tasting experiences in the entire Cape Winelands.
Laborie
Paarl, Western Cape
A treasured property in the heart of Paarl, Laborie is one of the most historic wine estates in the Cape, with roots stretching back to the late seventeenth century. Today owned by KWV, Laborie has been developed as a showcase wine estate and premier Cape Winelands hospitality destination, with an award-winning restaurant, luxury accommodation and beautiful gardens surrounding the historic Cape Dutch homestead.
Laborie's wines reflect the rich, sun-kissed character of the Paarl terroir, with particular strength in Cap Classique sparkling wines, the estate is regarded as one of South Africa's finest producers of méthode traditionnelle bubbles. The Laborie Jean Taillefert range represents the estate's most ambitious expressions, delivering Bordeaux-inspired elegance rooted in Paarl's distinctive soils.
Meerlust
Stellenbosch Coastal, Western Cape
If there is a single estate that embodies the soul of South African fine wine, it is Meerlust. Founded in 1693 and in the continuous ownership of the Myburgh family since 1756, eight unbroken generations, Meerlust has never sold a single vine. Its name, 'pleasure of the sea' in Dutch, captures the languorous character of this coastal estate 15km south of Stellenbosch, where cooling ocean breezes off the Indian Ocean create ideal conditions for slow, even ripening.
Meerlust's flagship Rubicon, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc first produced in 1980, has become one of the most celebrated and collected wines in South Africa, earning 90+ points from Robert Parker and international acclaim. The estate also inspired American novelist James Michener, who visited in 1978 and used it as inspiration for his epic novel The Covenant. Meerlust is, simply, irreplaceable.
Muratie
Simonsberg, Stellenbosch
Step through the gates of Muratie and time slows to a different pace. Granted in 1685 to soldier Laurens Campher by Governor Simon van der Stel, Muratie is one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa, tucked into the beautiful Knorhoek Valley north of Stellenbosch. Cobwebs, some said to date from the 1600s, still line the ancient cellar walls, and original paintings and furniture from across the centuries fill every corner of the atmospheric tasting room.
Every Muratie wine is named for a legendary figure from the estate's extraordinary past: Ansela van de Caab (Campher's wife, a former slave from the Cape Castle), Martin Melck, and the bohemian German artist George Paul Canitz, who arrived in 1926 on horseback, planted the first Pinot Noir in South Africa in 1927, and fell so deeply in love with Muratie that he never left. Today, the Melck family ensures that at Muratie, every day is Heritage Day.
Natte Valleij
Simonsberg, Stellenbosch
Set on the historic lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains, within easy reach of Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, Natte Valleij, 'Wet Valley' in Afrikaans, is a picturesque boutique estate with roots in the earliest years of European settlement at the Cape. The farm's heritage architecture, towering oak trees and vine-clad slopes offer a quintessential Cape Winelands experience.
Natte Valleij's winemaking philosophy centres on expressing the unique character of its Simonsberg terroir, granite-rich soils and a favourable aspect that coaxes exceptional concentration and complexity from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc. A beloved destination for wine lovers exploring the Stellenbosch region, the estate also offers charming farm accommodation within its historic grounds.
Nederburg
Paarl, Western Cape
Established in 1791, Nederburg is among the most historic and storied wine estates in South Africa. The handsome manor house and its surrounding oak-lined grounds in Paarl have been the backdrop to some of the Cape's most celebrated winemaking moments, and the annual Nederburg Auction was for decades the most prestigious wine auction in Africa, bringing the estate global recognition.
Today part of Libertas Vineyards, Nederburg produces wine across a vast range of styles, with the Heritage Heroes range paying tribute to the legendary figures who shaped the estate's destiny across more than two centuries. The Private Bin selections and Ingenuity range represent some of South Africa's finest-value premium wines, drawing on grapes from Paarl, Stellenbosch, Elgin and Darling, diversity that speaks to the enormous breadth of the Cape Winelands.
Paul Cluver
Elgin Valley, Western Cape
A fourth-generation family business, Paul Cluver is recognised as the pioneer of fine wine production in the Elgin Valley, the cool-climate haven east of Stellenbosch that has transformed South African viticulture over the past three decades. When Paul Cluver and his family first planted vines in this valley of apple orchards and misty mountain passes, they were creating something entirely new: a cool-climate fine wine region for South Africa.
Today Elgin is celebrated worldwide, but Paul Cluver remains its defining estate. Their Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc have all achieved international recognition, with the Noble Late Harvest Riesling considered one of the finest dessert wines produced in the southern hemisphere. The estate is also a model of environmental stewardship, having preserved vast tracts of indigenous fynbos and established itself as a leading conservation champion.
Protea
Western Cape
Named after the Protea, South Africa's national flower, celebrated for its beauty, resilience and extraordinary diversity, Protea wines are an accessible and characterful range from the Anthonij Rupert stable that distils the spirit of the Cape Winelands into every bottle. Drawing on grapes from across the Cape's most celebrated wine-growing regions, the wines are crafted to be expressive, welcoming and genuinely enjoyable.
Protea offers a wonderful entry point into South African fine wine, while retaining the quality pedigree of one of the Cape's most respected wine families. Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are all produced with the care and attention that the Anthonij Rupert name guarantees. An ideal pairing with Billy Tong biltong for those exploring South African wine for the first time.
Raats Family Wines
Polkadraai Hills, Stellenbosch
Raats Family Wines is one of the most inspiring success stories in modern South African wine. Founded in 2000 by Bruwer Raats, then the youngest Cellarmaster in South Africa, having taken that role at Delaire Graff Estate at just 26, Raats was built on a bold policy of excellence through specialisation. Bruwer chose to focus exclusively on two grape varieties then considered unfashionable: Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.
The gamble paid off spectacularly. The Eden High Density Chenin Blanc and Single Vineyard Cabernet Franc are now global benchmarks for both varieties, drawn from old-vine, low-yielding parcels on decomposed granite and Table Mountain Sandstone soils of the Polkadraai Hills. In one extraordinary year, Raats received an unprecedented eight five-star ratings in the John Platter Wine Guide, more than any producer in the Guide's 40-year history.
Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons
Franschhoek, Western Cape
When two of the world's great wine families unite, the results are extraordinary. Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons was established in 1997 through a partnership between the late Dr Anton Rupert, the South African business titan, and Baron Edmond de Rothschild of the legendary French wine dynasty. Their shared ambition was clear and uncompromising: to produce South African wine of genuinely world-class renown.
The estate draws on the combined heritage of Bordeaux's finest traditions and the exceptional terroir of the Franschhoek Valley. The flagship Baron Edmond and Baroness Nadine wines are Bordeaux-style blends of exceptional complexity and elegance, while the Classique range offers more accessible expressions of the same meticulous philosophy. Rupert & Rothschild is a jewel in the crown of South African fine wine, and one of the most prestigious names in our collection.
Springfield Estate
Robertson, Western Cape
Springfield Estate in Robertson is a treasure for lovers of naturally made, terroir-driven wine. The Bruwer family, now in their fourth generation as wine growers, and ninth generation descended from French Huguenots who arrived from the Loire Valley in 1688 with bundles of vines, has farmed at Springfield since 1898. Their guiding philosophy, 'Made on Honour', is a commitment to the most natural winemaking possible: wild yeast fermentations, whole-berry techniques, and minimal intervention.
Springfield's wines have achieved international cult status. The Life from Stone Sauvignon Blanc, grown on decomposed shale and limestone and fermented with wild yeast, appears on the lists of some of the world's finest restaurants. The Wild Yeast Chardonnay, Whole Berry Cabernet Sauvignon and flagship Work of Time are collector's items. The Thunderchild blend quietly supports a local orphanage with each bottle sold. Springfield is South African wine at its most honest and compelling.
Tassenberg
Western Cape
Tassenberg occupies an affectionate place in the hearts of South Africans. Known fondly as 'Tassies', this wine has been a constant companion at South African dining tables, braais and gatherings for generations. First produced in the 1930s, Tassenberg is one of the oldest continuously produced wine brands in South Africa, and its reputation for honest, full-flavoured, good-value red wine has endured through decades of change.
While the South African wine world has evolved dramatically around it, Tassenberg has remained resolutely itself, unpretentious, generous and reliably good. For those new to South African wine, a glass of Tassies is a piece of living history; for those who grew up with it, it is an irreplaceable taste of home.
Thelema Mountain Vineyards
Simonsberg, Stellenbosch
Named after the utopian Abbey of Thélème imagined by sixteenth-century French monk and writer François Rabelais, whose only rule was "Do What Thou Wilt", Thelema Mountain Vineyards was purchased in 1983 by accountant-turned-winemaker Gyles Webb, who abandoned his career in Durban after tasting a glass of Burgundian Puligny-Montrachet and deciding there could be no other calling. The first wines under the Thelema label were released in 1988.
Situated at up to 530 metres above sea level on the south-easterly slopes of the Simonsberg, among the highest-elevation vineyards in Stellenbosch, Thelema produces wines of exceptional concentration and freshness. By the mid-1990s, its wines were selling out within weeks of release. The estate has firmly established itself as one of the Cape's leading voices in Cabernet Sauvignon, while the Sutherland range, produced from a second farm in Elgin acquired in 2002, showcases world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Tokara
Helshoogte, Stellenbosch
Perched dramatically atop the Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, Tokara is one of the most visually stunning wine estates in South Africa. Established in the late 1990s when banker GT Ferreira purchased the farm and commissioned a world-class gravity-flow winery designed by award-winning architect Robert Silke, Tokara quickly rose to prominence and is today consistently ranked among the Cape's top producers.
Tokara is particularly celebrated for its Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Bordeaux-style red blends, all of which demonstrate the estate's exceptional elevation and diverse soil types to superb effect. The estate also produces outstanding extra-virgin olive oil, and the Tokara Restaurant, a sleek glass-and-steel statement with panoramic views, is one of the finest dining destinations in the Cape Winelands. An on-site art gallery featuring tapestries by William Kentridge completes an already exceptional experience.
Vignamaggio
Paarl, Western Cape
Drawing its name from the famous Vignamaggio estate in Tuscany's Chianti Classico region, reputedly the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Vignamaggio South Africa brings an Italian sensibility to the Cape Winelands. The estate is dedicated to Italian-inspired winemaking, producing wines from varieties such as Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Barbera alongside classic Cape cultivars, exploring what these noble Italian grapes can express in South African terroir.
This cross-cultural approach produces wines of real intrigue and originality, deeply expressive of their South African origin while carrying the structural elegance of the Italian tradition. For wine lovers with a passion for Italian varieties, Vignamaggio is a fascinating and often surprising discovery in the Cape wine landscape, and one of the more distinctive bottles in our collection.
Warwick Wine Estate
Simonsberg, Stellenbosch
History runs deep at Warwick. The farm, originally named De Goede Sukses (Good Success), has roots stretching to 1771, when it was acquired by Colonel William Alexander Gordon, Commanding Officer of the Warwickshire Regiment, who chose to remain at the Cape rather than return to England. It was Gordon who renamed the farm 'Warwick' in 1902. In 1964, Stan Ratcliffe purchased the estate and, together with his wife Norma, began its transformation into one of South Africa's great wine properties.
Norma Ratcliffe became one of South Africa's first female winemakers, releasing the first Warwick wine in 1984 and the iconic Trilogy Bordeaux blend in 1986. She was later the first woman inducted into the Cape Winemakers Guild. The Three Cape Ladies blend, a Cape classic that featured as the seduction wine in the James Bond novel Carte Blanche, and the Trilogy are among the most celebrated wines produced in the Cape Winelands today.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best South African wine regions?
South Africa's premier wine regions include Stellenbosch (renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinotage), Franschhoek (known for its French Huguenot heritage and elegant blends), Paarl (rich, full-bodied reds and outstanding Cap Classique), Robertson (exceptional Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from limestone soils), and the cool-climate regions of Elgin and Walker Bay (world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay). The Swartland, north of Cape Town, has become a hotbed of natural winemaking innovation and is increasingly sought after by serious collectors.
What is Pinotage and why is it unique to South Africa?
Pinotage is a grape variety created exclusively in South Africa in 1925 by Professor Abraham Perold at Stellenbosch University, as a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (then known as Hermitage). At its best, Pinotage produces deeply coloured, richly textured wines with notes of dark plum, spice, chocolate and a distinctive smoky earthiness, unlike anything else in the wine world. Estates such as Kanonkop, Beyerskloof and Kaapzicht are considered its greatest champions, and all three are stocked at Billy Tong.
What is Méthode Cap Classique (MCC)?
Méthode Cap Classique is South Africa's equivalent of Champagne, sparkling wine produced by the traditional method of secondary fermentation inside the bottle, creating natural bubbles and the characteristic bready, toasty complexity associated with fine Champagne. South African MCC has achieved remarkable quality and is growing rapidly in international recognition. JC Le Roux, L'Ormarins and Laborie are among the finest MCC producers in our collection.
What food pairs well with South African wines?
South African wines are extraordinarily versatile with food. Bold reds, Kanonkop Pinotage, Warwick Trilogy, Meerlust Rubicon, pair magnificently with grilled meats, lamb and, of course, Billy Tong biltong. Cool-climate whites such as Iona Sauvignon Blanc and Springfield Life from Stone work beautifully with seafood, soft cheeses and poultry. Ken Forrester and Raats Chenin Blancs are wonderful partners for spiced dishes, Asian cuisine and smoked fish. Cap Classique from JC Le Roux or L'Ormarins is perfect for celebrations, aperitifs and light starters.
